On Sunday, January 3, 2010, at about 7:20 pm, Grant County Sheriff's Deputy John Bernard was killed in a vehicle collision while on routine patrol about 10 miles south of Ephrata.
Over the course of the week that followed, John's family and the Grant County Sheriff's Office were helped by citizens and emergency response agencies from Grant County, across Washington, the U.S. and Canada. Huge support was received planning John's funeral. Law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, the Behind the Badge Foundation and Big Bend Community College worked as a team to honor John's life and his family.
On May 2, 2012 the Grant County Sheriff's Office unveiled and dedicated the Fallen Officers Memorial in the lobby of the Law and Justice Building in Ephrata. The granite memorial bears cast bronze plaques, one of which is in memory of Deputy John Bernard.
We will always remember John, John's family, and everybody who supported his family and the Grant County Sheriff's Office.
